Flame tidbits: Recruiting update, Farmer signs with Vikings

With the national signing period well underway and the UIC roster pretty much stocked for next season, the Flames donít appear to be signing any new players. A source told Whoosh! that it isnít likely that UIC will sign anybody.

With that said, the Flames are looking at underclassmen. One target was Centralia junior forward Matt Shaw, but Shaw, a 6-foot-6 banger, recently committed to Southern Illinois. The Salukis, UIC, Butler and Bradley were among Shawís suitors, according to Chicagohoops.com.

The last Flame to come from Centralia was center Cliffton Flagg, who played from 1996 to 1998 and was a member of UICís first NCAA tournament team. Flagg came to UIC via Kaskaskia Community College.

NFLíS VIKINGS SIGN FARMER: One-time UIC walk-on Steve Farmerís football dreams may become a reality when the Minnesota Vikings signed the undrafted free agent tight end upon conclusion last weekendís NFL draft.

Farmer decided to leave UIC after the 1998-99 season to play football at Joliet Junior College. He eventually landed at Tennessee State. Farmer played one year for the Flames and was pivotal in UICís memorable overtime victory over Florida International at the Pavilion in December of 1998.
