Tarkus Ferguson was named the conferenceís co-Freshman of the Week, meaning the Flames have had four different players honored this season to become the first Horizon team to do so.
In a week that featured three games in six days, the combo guard out of Belleville Althoff High School, averaged 12.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists per contest. He was co-winner along with Northern Kentucky forward Carson Williams.
Ferguson joins classmates Marcus Ottey (Nov. 21), Godwin Boahen (Dec. 26) and Dominique Matthews (Feb. 13) to secure Freshman of the Week honors.
Ferguson racked up 11 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in an 87-79 loss to Green Bay in UICís final home game on Feb. 21. He had another big night against Northern Kentucky on Friday, recording 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
Though he struggled in Sundayís regular season finale against Wright State, Ferguson closed the week with a team-high six rebounds.
Not counting the injured Dikembe Dixson, who played just 10 games, Ferguson finished the regular season as the teamís second-leading scorer with 11.1 points per game. He led the team in assists (4.6 per game) and was third in rebounding (4.9). He also swiped a team-best 37 steals.
Ferguson inexplicably missed out the honor a few weeks after his heroic performance in the Flamesí 105-100 overtime win at Milwaukee when he scored 12 of his 25 points in the extra session and handed out a career-best 11 assists.
Ferguson arguably is one of the top candidates for Horizon League Freshman of the Year when the results are announced this week.
