Fifth-year senior guard Jay Harris scored 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out seven assists to lead UIC. Jake Wiegand posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Flames, who suffered their first home loss of the season.

Kerwin Smith contributed 12 points and Jerome Garrison chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds for the Lopes (3-4).

Again the Flames started slowly, falling behind 14-6 before awakening a bit. UIC rallied to tie the game at 21-21 after a Wiegand dunk and Jason McClellan’s 3-pointer. Grand Canyon then took a 26-21 lead at the break as the Flames finished the first half by shooting 22.6 percent.

Freshman center Tai Odiase sparked a 9-2 run to start the second half as the Flames took their first lead of the game at 30-28.

The teams exchanged the lead a few times before the Lopes took control.

Ryan Majerle scored on back-to-back possessions, including a layup with 2:02 left to give Grand Canyon a 60-52 lead.

UIC fought back to within 63-61 after layups by Harris and D’Juan Miller, but the Flames could get no closer.
