Bailey earns Horizon Player of the Week
(12/02/02)
Junior point guard Martell Bailey was named the Horizon League Player of the Week Monday morning.
The 5-foot-10 Bailey (pictured) had a terrific game in UIC’s 78-65 road victory over Illinois State last Saturday. He tallied 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting, doled out nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds in helping the Flames to their first road victory of the season. He was a perfect 6-of-6 shooting in the first half of that game.
Bailey, playing like his brother, Loyola guard David Bailey, leads the conference in assists with 9.0 per contest. He is also sixth in scoring (16.3 points per game) and 11th in rebounding (5.7 per game).
Bailey, who was a member of the conference’s All-Newcomer Team last year, had nine assists in each of the Flames’ first three games, which is a Horizon League single-game best.
The last Flame to take home Horizon League Player of the Week honors was guard Jon-Pierre Mitchom in Jan. 2000. Mitchom had a 33-point outburst in UIC’s quadruple-overtime victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Jan. 11, 2000.
